getting your book illustrated:

Before contacting me

Hello!

If you are self publishing or if this is your first book--this page is for you.

You will know most of this page's contents if you have already hired an illustrator before.

STEP ONE: Before you send me your script--make sure it has been critiqued and  EDITED.  This will make your story be at its strongest.  Your story will not have any typos and you won't have to communicate any changes to me in the middle of the drafting process.  If I have already done the illustration but you then need me to make substantial changes to the it, it will the cost the percentage of the amount I have to do compared to the work of just doing another illustration.  So, make sure your script is completely done before you contact me for work on your story.

STEP TWO: Research the printer you will be using to print your book.  Not all printers use the same format page size or page amount.  You need to know this, so that I can know what dimensions I should do my illustrations.  Otherwise your layout will not be what you envision.

STEP THREE:  Make a BUDGET .  How much are you willing to spend?  I have different styles and media that are scaled for a lower budge= less detail, a medium budget=medium detail, and higher budget=higher detail.  ***You might have to make compromises between your vision and your budget.***

You will need to invest a lot of your time not only on getting your script ready but if you are self publishing then also on formatting, researching a printing/publishing company, and then marketing your book.  Please be available to review and send feedback regularly during the week for the next month concerning the development of sketch ideas for your story. COMMUNICATION IS KEY.

DISCLAMER

I can only speak for myself when it comes to my illustration process. I try to follow standard practices, but every illustrator has their individual quarks.
